The story begins in the year 2000, Joel Smith is on a road trip with his best friend Adam. When they stumble into an abandoned Mine, Joel's curious nature gets the better of him and while exploring the Mine he's transported back to the year 1941. A man out of time. Joel begins a new life in a pre-war 1941 era, he meets his grandmother Ginny, finds new friends and falls in love. Will he go back to the year 2000 when the opportunity presents? can he leave this new life behind?
In terms of the characters, I thought most of them were interesting, Joel was just okay though since I felt he was very predictable in his actions but still, he carried the story well.
My other favorite character was Tom Carter, Tom gets into trouble and Joel helps him get out of it, as a thank you Tom lets Joel stay with his family and they become good friends. I enjoyed the dynamic between Joel and Tom's family and Tom's kind-hearted nature.
Other characters I found interesting were Katie and Ginny, Ginny is Tom's girlfriend and Joel's grandmother and she is a reporter. She is very clever and independent which I appreciated that. I felt for her when Tom had to go to war.
The addition of Katie, who comes from a Japanese family was interesting, especially because of the circumstances in those years, it added an element to the story and I loved the role she played towards the end of the book.
My only complaint is I didn't like the romance between Joel and Grace that much, I didn't like the fact that she was engaged when she met Joel and the whole idea of choosing between two men isn't really my cup of tea. It bothered me for almost half a book, As the story progressed their relationship was more believable and it seems like they truly loved each other and without giving too much away the ending was very emotional! in a good way!
The best way I would describe The Mine is as a Time Travel Romance story. Though it has its ups and downs the story overall was interesting and written with great believable characters and fabulous descriptions of the pre-WW2 era in America which is always an interesting time to explore and you could tell the writer has extensive knowledge of that time. The book was easy to read and the plot moved forward in a good way. The ending was emotional and concluded the story for many of the characters without leaving too many loose ends.
